Whilst regarded as a wild wilderness it is a managed environment with large tracts of land run as private sporting estates.
The Highland clearances resulted in the land being cleared for sheep and the creation of planned fishing towns such as Ullapool and Wick designed by Telford. 
Forestry followed and a vast mono-culture emerged, much re-wilding is now taking place. 
The Jacobite rebellions resulted in forts such as Fort William & Augustus both busy tourist towns whilst Fort George remains a military base.
The North Coast 500 has popularised the region.
