Two regions - the Borders and Dumfries & Galloway are often ignored as visitors rush north to the Highlands.

The Borders is now a genteel mix of old family estates, farmland, pretty villages and towns - alongside numerous ruined Abbeys.

Dumfries is the main centre along with smaller towns such as Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright and Stranraer which is the ferry terminal to Ireland.
Galloway forest Park is visible from space and known for its 'dark sky' status.
